As yet unidentified gunmen have reportedly attacked two beach resort hotels - including the Etoile du Sud hotel - in Grand-Bassam, approximately 40km/25mi from the national capital of Abidjan. Security forces are responding, but the situation remains fluid. At least a dozen casualties - including four Europeans - have been reported at the time of this writing.
This marks the latest of several attacks on resort hotels in recent months, following attacks on hotels in Tunisia, Mali and Somalia. While it is too soon to confirm the identities of the attackers, this is a clear indication of a shift if militant target selection.
Ivory Coast was long considered one of the more stable countries in western Africa, its history marred only by a military coup in 1999, and a brief civil war in 2002.
