The US Armed Forces are in direct competition with not only foreign militaries, but local, state and federal law enforcement agencies in acquiring Military Working Dogs (MWDs). The animals have become increasingly vital in both military and law enforcement over the last two decades, and competition - as well as prices - is fierce.
At the same time, a small startup in Georgia is utilizing the talents of veterans of "Star Wars" production studio Industrial Light & Magic to build realistic animatronic mannequins ("caninnequins"?) to train combat medics to treat the real qnumals in combat.
